Wasini United Football Club

Ondanks dat dit project is afgelopen krijg ik de laaste tijd veel mailtjes van mensen die in Kenia op vakantie zijn geweest en ook het eiland Wasini bezochten. Hier krijgen ze dan te zien wat de Monnik daar gerealiseerd heeft en zijn enorm verrast door de enorme blijdschap van de mensen daar die allemaal V.V. De Monnik van Schiermonnikoog kennen. Ook kreeg ik een aantal foto`s toegestuurd waarop duidelijk te zien is in welk rijtje voetbalclubs de Monnik eigenlijk thuishoort;

Dit heefit project heeft de Monnik een aantal jaren gesteund met een geldbedrag en droeg oa bij aan de realisering van het clubhuis en competitievoetbal op het eilandje.

Het project Wasini is inmiddels door ons afgesloten. Officieel op 31 december 2009.

In een brief aan Wasini leggen we de situatie uit

Dear WUFC,

how are you? How are the club and the competition going? As you know, in 2001 we started via Dr. Niek Heering to subsidize your club: yearly we donated to you about KSh. 70.000 untill this year. A kind of development aid. As you probably know, development aid doesn't mean: give people fish, but give them a net to catch fish, so at the end they are self-supporting. It was an income generating project. In that sense we think you can be independant now from us: you built your own clubhouse and bought a generator, DVD-player and TV-set. With that you are able to generate your own income through raising entrance fees for your cinema. And you can socialise in the building, receive your guests, change clothes and store the belongings of your club. Of course, the building can also be rented to non-members of the WUFC. But that means that they have to pay for that.
To be very clear: V.V. De Monnik gave this money for the good of the WUFC. For all members, not especially for certain tribes, subtribes, clans, families or individuals. No WUFC-member has to be excluded from the advantages of the existence of the clubhouse. We hope you keep this in mind and trust you are using the clubhouse and the cinema in this way. Only for that reason we helped the WUFC!

We think the time has come to stop with our aid to you: you can operate now on your own, so without our help. For that reason we have decided not to give you anymore money from this year on. Of course we hope to keep in contact with you, and to hear from time to time how you are doing!

Het eilandje ligt 1 km uit de kust en is vooral bekend om zijn prachtige koralen en duiklokaties. Het eiland is 3 bij 8 km en er zijn 3 plaatsjes: Wasini Village, Mkwiro Village en Nyuma Maji.
